The Deschamps ligature needle is a handled, curved needle with an eye near the tip. It is passed around a vessel or deep structure, a ligature is threaded through the eye, and the needle is withdrawn to leave the ligature in place for tying. This version is 27 cm long with a blunt tip and is curved for the right hand.
The blunt point helps the needle pass around a vessel without puncturing it, and the long shaft reaches deep structures in abdominal, pelvic and vascular surgery. Deschamps needles are made in right- and left-hand curves so the surgeon can pass the ligature from either side.
