Retractors-Hand Held

Hand-held retractors are held by an assistant to open an incision and hold tissue back. Unlike self-retaining retractors they can be repositioned instantly as the operation moves, and the blade shape is chosen for the depth and tissue: a wide curved Deaver for deep abdominal work, a small Senn for superficial wounds, a toothed scalp retractor for the scalp.

Sharp or Blunt Prongs?

Sharp prongs grip firmly in skin and scalp and do not slip. Blunt prongs are used near vessels, nerves and deeper tissue where a sharp tip could cause injury.

How to Choose

Depth. Choose a blade long enough to reach the bottom of the wound; a blade that is too short pulls on the wound edge.

Handle. Hollow and grip handles reduce fatigue for long retraction.
