Curettes

Curettes scrape and remove tissue or bone from a surface or cavity, and the working end is what separates one pattern from another. A bone curette needs a sharp, robust cup; an ethmoid or otologic curette needs a fine angled tip that reaches a confined space; a uterine curette needs a longer shaft and a blunter working end.

How to Choose the Right Curette

Match the pattern to the site. These are not interchangeable instruments. A bone curette's sharp cup is wrong for delicate sinus mucosa, and a fine otologic tip will not remove bone. Start from the procedure, not the size.

Cup or blade size. Curettes are specified closely because the working end has to reach the site and match its contour. Check the stated cup dimensions against the instrument you currently use — fractional-millimetre differences matter on otologic and ophthalmic patterns.

Angulation. Straight shafts suit direct access. Angled and malleable shafts reach around corners into confined spaces, which is why they dominate sinus and ear ranges.

Single or double-ended. Double-ended instruments carry two working profiles in one piece and reduce how many instruments a set needs. Single-ended patterns give a longer, better-balanced handle for controlled pressure.

What is the difference between a bone curette and an ethmoid curette?
A bone curette has a sharp, robust spoon-shaped cup built to remove bone and tissue from a cavity. An ethmoid curette has a finer, angled working end on a longer shaft, designed to reach into the confined space of the sinuses. They are built for different tissue and are not substitutes.

How do I work out which size I need?
Size is dictated by the site. Each product page lists cup or blade dimensions and shank angulation, so the fastest method is matching against the instrument you already use.

What does double-ended mean?
The instrument carries a working end at each end of the handle, usually in two different sizes or angles. It covers two profiles in one instrument, which reduces the piece count in a set.
