Deaver Retractor
The Deaver is a hand-held retractor with a long, thin, S-curved blade. The curve is the whole design: it lets the blade reach deep into the abdomen or chest and hold tissue aside while the handle stays up and out of the surgeon's line of work. Named after John Blair Deaver, the Philadelphia surgeon, it has been a standard in laparotomy and thoracotomy trays for over a century.
This collection covers the range by blade width and length, including the hollow-grip handle patterns and a pediatric size. Individual practices can order any instrument directly. Hospital procurement teams, distributors and buyers working to a tender or RFQ can contact our team for bulk pricing and quoted line items.

Why a Hollow Grip Handle?
A Deaver is held by an assistant, often for the length of an operation, and a solid steel handle is heavy. The hollow grip removes weight from the part of the instrument furthest from the tissue, which changes the balance as well as the mass — the blade end feels more controllable and the hand tires more slowly.
That sounds like a small thing until you consider what a tired assistant's retraction actually does: it drifts. Exposure quietly degrades, the surgeon compensates, and nobody says anything. Weight is a real clinical variable on any hand-held retractor used for long stretches.
How to Choose
Blade width. Width should match the amount of tissue you need held, not the size of the incision. A 1" blade slips between loops of bowel and behind structures; 2" is the everyday abdominal size; 2 1/2" and 3" hold a large mass of viscera or a thick abdominal wall aside in one move.
Blade length. Length is set by the depth of the field. 8 1/2" for pediatric and shallow work, 12" for standard laparotomy, 13–14 1/2" for deep pelvic and thoracic exposure. Too short and the blade will not reach past the tissue you are retracting; too long and the excess blade gets in the way.
Pediatric sizing. The 3/4" x 8 1/2" pattern is not simply a smaller adult retractor — an adult blade in a child's abdomen displaces far more than intended.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Deaver retractor used for?
Deep hand-held retraction in abdominal and thoracic surgery — holding the abdominal wall, liver, or loops of bowel aside so the operative field stays exposed. It is also used in gynaecological and thoracic procedures.
What is the difference between a Deaver and a Richardson retractor?
Blade shape. The Deaver blade is long, narrow and S-curved for depth. The Richardson has a short right-angle blade with a curved lip, designed to hook and hold the abdominal wall itself rather than reach past it.
Which width should I stock first?
The 2" x 12" is the most generally useful. Add a 1" for narrow work and a wider blade if you do deep pelvic or thoracic cases.
Is a Deaver self-retaining?
No. It is hand-held throughout, which is what gives continuous control over how much and in which direction tissue is retracted. For self-retaining abdominal retraction see the Balfour.
Do you supply these individually or as sets?
Individually — every instrument here can be ordered on its own. Send us your list for a full set and our team will quote it line by line, with bulk pricing for distributors and hospital procurement.
