Rongeurs

A rongeur bites. Its cupped jaws close on bone or tough tissue and take a piece away with each squeeze, which makes it the standard tool for removing bone in controlled, small increments rather than cutting it in one pass.

This collection holds more than 180 of them: general bone rongeurs for orthopedic and trauma work, laminectomy and intervertebral disc (IVD) rongeurs for spine, and long, slim pituitary rongeurs for transsphenoidal and deep neurosurgical access. Each can be ordered on its own, or quoted together as a set for a spine or neurosurgery tray.

Single Action or Double Action?

On a single-action rongeur the handles act directly on the jaws: simple, fast and easy to feel. A double-action (compound) rongeur, such as the Leksell pattern, adds a second hinge that multiplies the force at the jaw. The same squeeze bites through denser bone, and the surgeon's hand tires less over a long case.

Single action suits fine and moderate work where feel matters most. Double action earns its place on thick cortical bone and in long orthopedic and spinal procedures.

How to Choose

Bone rongeur, IVD, laminectomy or pituitary? Bone rongeurs are for open bone work. IVD rongeurs reach into the disc space to remove disc material. Laminectomy rongeurs are shaped to bite lamina and ligament. Pituitary rongeurs are long and narrow for deep, confined corridors.

Jaw direction. Straight for bone in line with the approach; up-biting or down-biting to reach above or below it without levering the instrument.

Bite size and length. Stated on every listing — for example 3 x 10mm on the Love-Gruenwald IVD range. Longer shafts reach deeper; shorter ones give more control.
