Dilators

A dilator opens a canal gradually, by passing progressively larger sizes. The method is the same whether the canal is the cervix, the urethra, a tear duct, a blood vessel or the trachea. What changes is the shape and the size range.

This collection holds nearly 140 dilators across gynecology, urology, ophthalmology, vascular and airway surgery. Sizes are stated in millimetres or French on every listing. Order single sizes, or complete sets where they are offered.

Hegar, Pratt or Hank?

All three dilate the cervix, but the tips differ. The Hegar has a short, rounded taper and is sized in millimetres; it is the most widely used pattern. The Pratt has a long, gradual taper, so each size eases the cervix open over a longer distance with less force. The Hank is a slim, gently tapered pattern often used where a finer progression is wanted.

Most clinicians stock one pattern as a full graduated set, so they can move up one size at a time.

How to Choose

Single or double-ended. Double-ended dilators carry two consecutive sizes, so a set takes half as many instruments.

Size system. Uterine dilators are sized in millimetres. Urethral bougies are sized in French: divide by three for millimetres, so 24 Fr is 8mm.

Set or single sizes. Sets cover the whole progression. Singles replace a lost or damaged size.
