Two Points or a Rake?

This is the real difference between the Gelpi and the Beckman patterns on this page, and it decides which one you want.

A Gelpi concentrates all the force into one point per side. It holds a short, narrow incision open aggressively and takes up almost no room at the wound edge. The cost is that the force is concentrated — on soft or friable tissue a single point can tear through.

A Beckman head spreads the same frame force across several prongs. It holds a wider wound edge more gently and is the better choice where a single point would cut out. The 2 x 1-3/4" Beckman-Eaton is the widest head here.

How to Choose

Sharp or blunt tips. Sharp tips anchor in fascia, periosteum and dense tissue and will not slip; they also perforate what you do not want perforated. Blunt tips are the choice next to vessels, nerves, bowel or skin.

Frame length. 3.5" and 4.5" are for small, shallow incisions — hand, foot, minor procedures. 5.5" is the general-purpose size. 7.5" reaches deeper and opens wider.

Rake head size. On the Beckman patterns the head dimensions describe prong rows: 1 x 1" is the finest, 2 x 1-3/4" the broadest and most gentle per prong.

What is a Gelpi retractor used for?
Holding small or narrow incisions open without an assistant — spinal and orthopaedic exposures, veterinary surgery, and minor procedures. The ratchet keeps it open at whatever width you set.

What is the difference between a Gelpi and a Weitlaner?
Tip geometry. The Gelpi has one point per arm; the Weitlaner has a row of rake prongs. Use the Gelpi where you need a narrow wound held open hard, the Weitlaner where you need a wider edge held evenly.

Sharp or blunt — which should I stock?
If you are stocking one, blunt is the more forgiving instrument. Sharp tips are for tough fibrous tissue that a blunt tip slides off, and should be chosen deliberately.

What is a Beckman-Adson retractor?
A self-retaining retractor on the same ratcheted frame but with a small rake head instead of a single point, in blunt and sharp versions across two head sizes.
