Surgical spatulas are flat, smooth blades used to hold tissue back, protect it, or manipulate it without cutting. In neurosurgery they retract brain; in ophthalmology they manipulate the lens nucleus or iris; in laparoscopy they move organs aside.

Malleable or Rigid?

Malleable brain spatulas can be bent to the contour of the field and held by a self-retaining arm. Rigid spatulas hold their shape under load and suit hand-held retraction. Ophthalmic spatulas are rigid and very thin, shaped for a specific step in the procedure.

How to Choose

Width and taper. Choose the narrowest blade that holds the tissue, to spread pressure without crowding the field.

Specialty. For cataract work, match the spatula to the step: nucleus rotation, IOL positioning or iris sweep.
