Elevators

An elevator lifts one layer off another: periosteum off bone, mucoperichondrium off septal cartilage, a tooth root from its socket. The blade slides into the plane and levers it apart with little cutting. That is why elevators appear in almost every tray from oral surgery to spine.

Sharp or Blunt?

A sharp elevator starts the plane. Its edge gets under periosteum or mucosa that is firmly attached. A blunt elevator continues the plane once it is started, sweeping tissue off with less risk of tearing through it. Double-ended patterns such as the Freer often carry one of each, so the surgeon can switch without changing instruments.

How to Choose

Width. Narrow blades (2–5mm) for septum, orbit and fine facial planes; wider blades (10mm and up) for long bones and the spine.

Curve. Straight blades for flat surfaces; curved blades to follow bone around a contour.

Edge. Round edges sweep; square or chisel edges get under tight attachments.

Dental or surgical. Root elevators and luxators are designed for tooth extraction and are different from periosteal elevators — both are listed here.
