Osteotomes

Osteotomes and chisels cut bone. Driven by a mallet, the edge splits or shaves bone along a line the surgeon controls — in orthopedic, spinal, maxillofacial, rhinoplasty and thoracic surgery alike.

This collection brings together more than 170 of them, from 2mm micro osteotomes to 32mm Hibbs blades, in the patterns surgeons ask for by name. Order any single width, or send a list and our team will quote a graduated set.

Osteotome, Chisel or Gouge?

An osteotome is bevelled on both faces, so it drives straight into bone and splits it along the line of the blade. A chisel is bevelled on one face only; the flat side rides the bone and the edge shaves or planes a layer away. A gouge has a curved, concave blade that scoops bone out.

The difference decides what the instrument is for: osteotomes for cutting through, chisels for shaping a surface, gouges for hollowing and harvesting.

How to Choose

Width. Match the blade to the cut. Narrow blades (2–6mm) for fine facial, hand and rhinoplasty work; wide blades (25mm and up) for long bones and the pelvis.

Straight or curved. Straight blades for flat, accessible surfaces; curved blades to follow a contour or reach around one.

Length. Shorter instruments (12–14cm) give control in small fields. 20–24cm reach deep and keep the hand clear of the mallet line.

Pairing. Every osteotome needs a mallet weighted for the job. A light mallet for fine facial work, a heavier one for long bones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an osteotome used for?
Cutting or splitting bone in a controlled line, usually driven by a mallet.

What is the difference between a Hibbs and a Lambotte osteotome?
Both are general orthopedic patterns. The Hibbs is a long, heavy spinal and orthopedic blade; the Lambotte is a slimmer, tapered blade widely used in orthopedic and trauma work.

Which osteotomes are used in rhinoplasty?
Fine patterns such as the Rubin, Sheehan and Silver, plus narrow micro osteotomes.
