Retractors

Retractors hold tissue, organs, and incision margins clear of the operative field. The choice between a handheld and a self-retaining pattern usually comes down to how many hands are available and how long the exposure has to be maintained.

Handheld Retractors

Held in position by an assistant, giving fast repositioning during a procedure. Patterns in this range include Deaver, Richardson, Senn, Hohmann and rake retractors, alongside Gosset and Harrington abdominal patterns and Young prostatic retractors. See all handheld retractors.

Self-Retaining Retractors

These hold their own position once set, freeing an assistant and keeping tension constant. The range includes Balfour abdominal frame retractors with adjustable side blades, Weitlaner ratcheted patterns with outward-curving prongs, and Gelpi sharp-pointed patterns for narrow, deep exposure.

We also carry laparoscopic retractors for minimally invasive procedures and complete surgical retractor sets where a matched range is needed in one purchase.

How to Choose the Right Retractor

Handheld or self-retaining. With an assistant available and exposure that needs frequent adjustment, handheld is faster and more responsive. For long procedures, short-handed theatres, or exposure that must stay fixed, self-retaining frees a pair of hands and holds tension consistently.

Blade depth and width. The blade has to reach past the tissue being retracted without crowding the field. Deep-cavity work needs longer blades; superficial procedures are better served by shallower ones that do not obstruct visibility.

Blade edge. Blunt, smooth blades reduce trauma to organs and soft tissue. Sharp and pronged patterns grip skin, fascia, and fibrous tissue that a smooth blade would slip off.

Ratchet mechanism. On self-retaining patterns, check the ratchet holds securely at your working width and releases cleanly under load.

What is the difference between a handheld and a self-retaining retractor?
A handheld retractor is held in position by an assistant throughout. A self-retaining retractor locks at a set width and holds tissue open on its own, freeing an assistant and keeping tension constant through longer procedures.

Which retractor pattern should I choose for abdominal exposure?
