View full detailsMost people assume supercut means sharper. It does not.
A supercut scissor has one conventionally razor-honed blade and one blade with a micro-serrated edge - sometimes called a saw edge. The serrations bite into tissue and stop it sliding forward ahead of the closing blades. Slippery, elastic tissue is exactly what ordinary scissors push rather than cut, which is why a blunt-feeling scissor often is not blunt at all; the tissue is simply escaping.
So what supercut buys is control, not edge. The cut starts where you put it and finishes where you stop, on tissue that would otherwise slip.
A plain surgical scissor can be resharpened many times by any competent service. A supercut edge cannot be treated the same way. Restoring it means reproducing the original serration geometry, not just honing a bevel, and most general sharpening services cannot do it - they will hone the serrated blade flat and quietly turn your supercut into an ordinary scissor that no longer grips.
Plan for a supercut scissor as a longer-cycle consumable rather than an indefinitely serviceable instrument, and check that whoever maintains your sets can actually service a serrated edge before sending one out.
The benefit scales with how slippery and elastic the tissue is, and inversely with how much the instrument relies on mass.
By long-standing convention, supercut instruments carry black rings or black handles, the same way tungsten-carbide instruments carry gold. It is a convention rather than a standard, so it is worth confirming against the catalog number rather than trusting the colour alone - but on a mixed tray it is how the scrub nurse finds them.
Is supercut the same as tungsten carbide? No, and they solve different problems. Tungsten carbide means the cutting inserts are a harder material, so the edge lasts longer. Supercut means one edge is micro-serrated, so tissue does not slip. An instrument can be either, both, or neither.
Which blade is the serrated one? One only - the other stays conventionally honed. A scissor serrated on both blades would crush rather than cut.
Do they need different technique? Slightly. A supercut needs less forward pressure, because the serration is already holding the tissue. Pushing as hard as you would with a plain scissor is how people over-cut on the first case.
