How to Choose a Retractor Set

Cervical or lumbar. Anterior cervical work (ACDF, corpectomy) uses a Caspar-type or Cloward set. Lumbar microdiscectomy and decompression use a McCulloch-type set.

Retraction only, or distraction too. If you also need to open the disc space, the ACF set combines both in one system.

Side-loading. Side-loading blades and inserts can be changed from the side without removing the whole retractor.

Stainless steel or carbon/PEEK. Carbon fibre and PEEK blades are radiolucent, so they do not block intraoperative X-ray, and they are lighter. Stainless steel blades are stronger and cost less.

Basic or Large. The Basic McCulloch-type set covers routine single-level work; the Large set adds a second hinged retractor for bigger exposures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a McCulloch retractor used for?
It is a self-retaining retractor for lumbar microdiscectomy. It holds the paraspinal muscles back through a small midline incision so the surgeon can reach the disc under the microscope.

What is the difference between our Caspar-type and Cloward cervical sets?
Both are used for anterior cervical surgery. Our Caspar-type system is side-loading and comes as a 30-piece set in a tray with cover. The Cloward sets have interchangeable blades, with a rigid-arm option.

Do the sets come with a sterilization tray?
The McCulloch-type, Caspar-type, ACF and LT sets include a tray. For trays and containers for other sets, see sterilization containers.
