Young Prostatic Retractors & Forceps | DDP Elite USA Skip to content

Young Instruments

The Young patterns come from Hugh Hampton Young, the American surgeon who built urology into a specialty of its own at Johns Hopkins in the early twentieth century. His open prostatectomy technique required instruments that did not exist, so he had them made — and the prostatic retractor and capsule forceps carrying his name are still the reference patterns for open prostatic surgery.

This collection gathers the Young instruments in our catalog, led by the prostatic retractor in both standard working lengths. Individual practices can order any instrument directly. Hospital procurement teams, distributors and buyers working to a tender or RFQ can contact our team for bulk pricing and quoted line items.

What This Collection Covers

  • Young prostatic retractors — 21cm and 22cm working lengths, including pattern 67105
  • Young capsule forceps, 20cm — for handling the prostatic capsule
  • Young tongue-seizing forceps, 6 1/4" — for holding and drawing the tongue forward
  • Young pliers — for wire and appliance work
  • Kevorkian-Younge curette, 11 3/4" — without basket, for endocervical curettage

How to Choose

Retractor working length. 21cm and 22cm are both standard. The difference is small and the choice is usually habit or tray standardisation rather than anatomy — order to match what your set already carries so instruments remain interchangeable between trays.

Pattern number. Where a pattern number is given (for example 67105), it identifies a specific blade geometry within the same nominal length. If you are replacing a single instrument in an existing set, matching the pattern number matters more than matching the length.

Capsule forceps. The jaws are shaped to hold prostatic capsule tissue securely without cutting through it. This is a purpose-specific instrument, not a general grasper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Young prostatic retractor used for?
Retracting tissue during open prostatic surgery, holding the operative field open so the prostatic bed stays accessible and visible.

Who was Young?
Hugh Hampton Young established urology as a surgical specialty in the United States, founding the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins. Several of the instruments he developed for open prostatectomy still carry his name.

Why does this collection include non-urological instruments?
Because the Young name attaches to more than one pattern. The tongue-seizing forceps and the pliers are unrelated to the urological instruments — they share only the eponym. They are listed here so that a search on "Young" finds all of them.

What is the Kevorkian-Younge curette?
An endocervical biopsy curette, listed here because of the Younge name. The "without basket" version has no tissue-collecting basket at the working end.

Do you supply these individually or as sets?
Individually — every instrument here can be ordered on its own. For a full urological set, send us your list and our team will quote it line by line, with bulk pricing for distributors and hospital procurement.
