Specula

Specula for examining the ear and nose, together with a selection of gynecological and eye specula. Ear specula are simple funnels, sized to the canal. Nasal specula spread the nostril with a pair of blades. Both are chosen almost entirely by size and blade length.

Round or Oval?

The ear canal is not a circle. It is roughly oval and narrows as it goes in. Round specula such as the Toynbee are general-purpose and easy to size by diameter. Oval specula such as the Gruber oval pattern follow the canal's shape, so a larger opening fits without pressing on the canal wall, giving more light and more room for an instrument.

How to Choose

Ear specula. Choose by the inner diameter at the tip. Smaller sizes for children and narrow canals; larger ones for adult examination and micro-otologic work. A set of three or four covers most patients.

Nasal specula. Blade length decides depth: short blades (18–32mm) for the nasal vestibule, infants and children; longer blades for the septum and deeper work.

Finish. Black specula reduce glare under a microscope or headlight.
