Why Sheath Size Matters

The sheath sets the outer diameter of the whole instrument, and with it patient comfort and what can pass through the channel. A 17Fr sheath is gentler for diagnostic cystoscopy. A 21–25Fr sheath leaves room for working instruments, stone baskets and irrigation flow. Female oblique-tip sheaths are shorter and angled for the female urethra.

Storz-style sheaths are color-coded by size so the right one can be picked at a glance on the back table.

How to Choose

Telescope angle. 30º is the standard for bladder inspection; 70º and 120º look back toward the bladder neck and anterior wall.

Telescope diameter. Most sheaths here take a 4mm telescope. Check the listing when pairing a scope with a sheath.

Bridge. An examination bridge for diagnosis, single or double channel for passing instruments, deflecting for steering catheters into the ureters.

System. Olympus and Storz parts are not interchangeable. Storz-style parts list the matching Storz reference number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the sheath colors mean?
On Storz-style sheaths the color marks the French size: yellow 17Fr, green 19Fr, red 21Fr, blue 23Fr, white 25Fr.

Can I buy a sheath without an obturator?
Yes. Sheaths are listed both alone and with their obturator.

What is a retrospective cystoscope?
A telescope with a very wide angle (120º) that looks back toward the entry point, used to inspect the bladder neck.
