Laparoscopic Forceps

Laparoscopic forceps do through a 5mm port what hands and ring-handled forceps do in open surgery: grasp, hold, dissect and retract. What changes is that the jaw is 30–45cm away from the hand, so the jaw pattern and the action behind it matter even more.

Single Action or Double Action?

On a single-action jaw one side is fixed and only the other moves. It opens less, but closes with more force and gives a precise, predictable bite — good for dissection and firm grasping.

On a double-action jaw both sides open. The mouth is wider, so it can take bulky tissue such as bowel, gallbladder or omentum, with the force spread more evenly. Many patterns here are listed in both forms so you can choose by task.

How to Choose

Jaw pattern. Atraumatic jaws (Babcock, bowel, fenestrated, wave) hold delicate tissue without crushing it. Toothed jaws (claw, cobra, tenaculum) hold firm tissue that must not slip. Maryland jaws are the standard curved dissector.

Diameter and length. 5mm is the working standard; 10mm for larger jaws and heavier tissue; 2–3mm for mini-laparoscopy. Longer shafts suit bariatric patients.

Handle. Ratchet handles lock the grip for retraction; non-ratchet handles open and close freely for dissection.
