Trocars & Cannulas

A trocar and cannula together create the port for laparoscopic surgery. The trocar (obturator) has a pointed or blunt tip that penetrates the abdominal wall; once in, it is removed and the cannula stays as a sealed channel for the camera and instruments.

Pyramidal or Conical Tip?

A pyramidal tip cuts through fascia with its edges and needs less force to enter. A conical (blunt) tip pushes tissue fibres apart instead of cutting them, which usually leaves a smaller fascial defect. Choice depends on the entry site and the surgeon's technique.

How to Choose

Diameter. Match the cannula to the largest instrument that will pass through it; 10 or 11 mm for the camera and staplers, 5 mm for most hand instruments.

Reducer. If one port must take both 10 mm and 5 mm instruments, add a reducer.

What is the difference between a trocar and a cannula?

Are reusable trocars autoclavable?
Yes. Stainless reusable trocar-cannulas are disassembled and steam sterilized; valves and seals are replaced as they wear.
