Punches

Surgical punches remove a clean, defined piece of tissue or bone with each bite. The jaw shape decides the job: a round cup for a biopsy, a backward-biting jaw for the maxillary sinus opening, a fine punch for the Descemet membrane, or a circular skin punch for a dermatological sample.

Forward, Backward or Circular?

Forward-biting punches cut ahead of the tip. Backward-biting punches (such as the antrum punch) hook behind an edge and pull the cut toward the surgeon, useful when the target is behind a ledge. Circular skin punches cut a round core with a twisting motion.

How to Choose

Specimen size. For biopsy, choose a jaw that takes an adequate sample for pathology without excess tissue.

Access. Where the target is behind a ledge, choose a backward-biting pattern.
