Sinuscopes

Endoscopic sinus surgery is done down a narrow corridor with a scope in one hand and an instrument in the other. This collection covers both sides of that: rigid sinuscopes in the common viewing angles, and the angled forceps, punches and scissors built to reach where the scope is looking.

Why Through-Cutting?

A conventional cup forceps grips tissue and pulls it free. In the sinuses that can strip mucosa well beyond the area being removed. A through-cutting punch has sharp opposing jaws that shear the tissue cleanly at the jaw line, so only what is inside the jaws comes away.

That is why through-cut instruments sit alongside the classic Blakesley rather than replacing it: the Blakesley for grasping and debris, the through-cut for removing tissue while sparing the lining around it.

How to Choose

Match the instrument angle to the scope angle. A 0º scope looks straight ahead; 30º is the general-purpose view; 45º and 70º look up and around into the frontal recess and maxillary sinus. Instruments at 45º and 90º exist to work in the field those angled scopes reveal.

Jaw direction. Straight, curved-up, left-biting and right-biting jaws each open a different wall. Backbiters cut toward the surgeon, which is what the uncinate and maxillary ostium usually call for.

Suction. A suction channel clears blood from the tip without swapping instruments.

Scope diameter. 4mm gives the brighter, wider image; 2.7mm fits narrow anatomy and pediatric patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Blakesley forceps?
A nasal forceps with cup-shaped jaws used to grasp and remove tissue and debris during sinus and nasal surgery. It comes straight and angled so the tip can follow the scope.

What is the difference between a 30º and a 70º sinuscope?
The angle is the direction of view relative to the shaft. A 30º scope is used for most of the procedure; a 70º scope looks sharply sideways and upward for the frontal and maxillary recesses.

What does a backbiter do?
Its jaw cuts backward, toward the handle, so tissue can be removed from the far side of an opening — typically when enlarging the maxillary ostium.

Are the scopes autoclavable?
Several are listed as autoclavable, and it is stated on the product page where it applies. Check each listing before choosing a sterilization method.
