Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is carried out almost entirely with pliers. Each one is shaped for a single job: forming a loop, bending an arch, crimping a band, seating an elastic or cutting a wire flush. So a practice's plier drawer is really a set of specialist tools rather than one tool in many sizes.

Why a Safety Hold?

When a distal end cutter trims an archwire behind the last molar, the cut-off piece can fly into the patient's mouth or throat. A safety-hold cutter has a small clamp beside the blades that grips the offcut as it is cut, so it comes out with the instrument. For distal cuts it is the standard of care, and it is why every distal end cutter here is listed with safety hold.

How to Choose

Wire size. Light wire pliers and cutters are for round and small wires. Heavier wires need a hard wire cutter or a plier rated for them.

Tip. Round beaks form loops and curves; flat and serrated beaks hold and bend; notched and grooved beaks form specific shapes such as clasps and arches.

Carbide inserts. Tungsten carbide tips hold their edge and grip longer than plain stainless steel.

Aligner pliers. Each clear aligner plier makes one kind of feature — a vertical or horizontal ridge, a dimple, a bite ramp — so practices usually stock several.
