Sheaths and obturators are the entry parts of a cystoscope or resectoscope. The sheath is the tube that passes through the urethra and carries irrigation; the obturator sits inside it during insertion so the tip is smooth and atraumatic. Once in place, the obturator is removed and the telescope and working element go in.

Visual, Timberlake or Deflecting?
A visual obturator lets you watch through the telescope as the sheath is passed. A Timberlake obturator has a smooth, rounded tip for blind insertion. A deflecting obturator has an adjustable tip that helps steer the sheath past a prostatic lobe or stricture.

Do obturators fit any sheath of the same size?
No. The obturator must match both the French size and the system of the sheath.
